The Apprentice Scheme
The Apprentice Schemes for Chefs and Front of House are a 3-year programme and include:
- Release to college for completion of NVQ stages 1-3 (specially developed courses for the Northcote Apprentices)
- An annual placement in a similar establishment to further knowledge
- Continual comprehensive and monitored in-house training
- On a rotation basis will experience each type of property within the Northcote & Ribble Valley Inns Group
- Placement with the Head gardener of Northcote to understand the seasonal produce grown
4th Year Apprentice Scholarship
For successful Apprentices who wish to further their training we offer a 4th year opportunity which includes:
- A 3-month placement abroad
- WSET (wines & Spirit Educational Trust) Intermediate
- Advanced Food Hygiene
- Supervisory Skills course
- In-house Training on Ordering; Stock rotation and stock taking; Junior management administration;
- Increased awareness of other departments – eg Finance & marketing
Recent Success Stories
Tom Parker - Chef Apprentice
Tom joined Northcote straight from school in 1996, having done a school placement with us, he decided this was his chosen career and embarked on the Northcote apprentice Scheme. In 2009 he successfully completed all parts of the Apprentice Scheme and has now embarked on the 4th year scholarship. In September Tom was promoted to Junior Sous Chef of the Northcote kitchen.
Michael Emminson - Chef Apprentice
Michael joined Northcote in 2007 after completing his A levels, he has worked in the kitchens of Northcote and also in Ribble valley Inns during his 3-year apprentice scheme, which he successfully passed in 2009. Michael has now embarked on the 4th year scholarship and has taken the position in September 2009 of Senior chef-de-partie in the Northcote kitchen.
Kirk Haworth - Chef Apprentice
Kirk Haworth had worked as a part-time kitchen porter and when he left Ribblesdale High School in 2003, it was without question in his mind that he wanted to be a chef. He joined the Apprentice Scheme and fully completed the 3-years and took up the position of Senior chef de Partie in the Northcote kitchen. He then achieved his 4th year scholarship which included a 3 month placement at Vila Joya in the Algarve. Kirk continued to grow in stature and skill as a chef in the Northcote brigade, whilst continuing to further his knowledge with stages at Fredsgatan in Sweden, Trafano Royal in Austria and the Fat duck at Bray.
Early 2008 Kirk left the Northcote kitchens to take up a post of chef-de-partie at the two star Michelin kitchens of the Square in London and from January 2009 he took the position of Senior chef De partie at the 2 Michelin star kitchen of Pied a Terre, London.
